Energy Efficiency in Industrial Processes

The basis for experimental activities and teaching is the Laboratory of energy intensive processes

Our focus

Currently, we deal with the following areas:

  • Complex analysis of the energy intensity of commercial and industrial processes (energy audits),
  • Testing appliances to evaluate their efficiency and other operational characteristics,
  • Optimization of industrial processes and individual equipment in order to reduce the consumption of energy and other process media,
  • Design and projection of energy saving measures including the acquisition of necessary data,
  • Research into the evaporation and thickening of waste water and process water,
  • Analysis of gas microturbine as a part of industrial plant.

Research strategy

  • comprehensive solutions covering a review of possible energy saving measures, data acquisition in industrial plants, calculations, design of particular measures including design and implementation support
  • use of a modern testing room to provide experimental data

Research projects

Activities in this area are closely linked to a long-term strategic project:

  • NETME CENTRE PLUS, provider: The Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport of the Czech Republic, National sustainability program I, LO1202, 2014–2018

and other specific projects, including:

  • The development of equipment for thickening waste water from biogas plants, funded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, 2017–2019

Cooperation with commercial companies and municipal areas

Applied research is focused on the design of particular energy saving measures and innovation of selected technological equipment. Below is the list of significant contracts from the last three years:

  • Innovation of pharmaceutical technology for egg shell processing. Customer: Biomin, a.s., Cífer (SVK), 2015-today,
  • Development of technology for sewage separation, Customer: PBS POWER EQUIPMENT, s.r.o., Třebíč (CZE), 2014-today,
  • Experimental verification of the operating parameters for laundry machines. Customer: Alliance Laundry CE, s.r.o., Příbor (CZE), 2014-today,
  • Increasing the efficiency of a heat pump system. Customer: ETES, s.r.o., Brno (CZE), 2015-today,
  • Increasing the efficiency of heat production in a manufacturing enterprise. Customer: Sapeli, a.s., Jihlava (CZE), 2014–2015,
  • Energy audit of laundry and subsequent design of laundry technology, including its spatial layout, Customer: PEVI, s.r.o., Lanškroun (CZE), 2013–2015,
  • Optimization of compressed air consumption for dry ice blasting, Customer: Alkion service s.r.o., Prague (CZE), 2013–2015.

Student participation

Our students are involved in the projects and the commercial contracts. Often bachelor’s and master’s dissertation topics are connected to the projects or contracts.

A great advantage of most topics is the possibility of practical work in the Laboratory of Energy Intensive Processes.
